Carbon Credits Explained

If you listen to cable news or NPR you probably have heard of carbon credits. You may even have been driving down a highway and thought to yourself, “What the F are Carbon Credits????”

I know I have.

Never fear, Some Cranky Guy is near! I can explain Carbon Credits.

It works like this. Some organization, often a GOVERNMENT, sets pollution caps. And you know how I feel about government, right? So you know right off the bat, right out of the chute, we are screwed. Just bend down folks, if any government is involved, the people are going to get it up the wazoo!

So, let’s say the evil government decides companies can only emit CO2 at a certain level. If company A comes in under the cap, they have carbon credits. Company B needs to emit more CO2 in their process, so they can buy carbon credits from company A.

There are “independent” bodies that “check” and “verify” the companies. I am sure they do an excellent job, since they employ Martians in this capacity. If they employed humans, who are weak creatures prone to bribery, incompetence and just plan laziness, then this whole carbon credit thing would be a scam right from the get go!

So, we have this imaginary fantasy called Carbon Credits. What do you do with them? Just like any other fake form of money, you sell them and buy them and invest in them and you get obscenely rich! Credits can be exchanged between businesses or bought and sold in international markets at the prevailing market price.

The following is from an article about Morgan Stanley, at this web site.

Carbon trading was a $21.5 billion market in the first nine months of 2006 according to the World Bank. That’s already up from about $11 billion for all of 2005. Some experts think carbon trading could be worth many times that within the next few years, and think it may peak in 2007 and 2008.

Specialist investors like Morgan Stanley are lapping up emissions-permitting carbon credits and preparing to offer them to countries chasing targets as the 2012 date nears. Banks hope to serve as intermediaries - buying credits from emissions-cutting projects now and selling on to national governments and industry later - at a profit, of course.

One estimate suggests carbon trading could be worth $1,000bn as the 2012 Kyoto deadline nears.

Now, all of this is based on the undisputed fact that CO2 produced by the Human Race is directly behind Global Warming.

There is just one minor, slight, teenie weenie problem. Global Warming is bullshit. Another fantasy. The planet had been going through periods of warming and cooling for millions and millions of years. The debate IS over. Global Warming is a scam. And the rich pigs like Al “I invented the Internet” Gore are getting filthy rich off of this scam.

Here is a list of 31,072 American scientists who have signed a petition declaring Global Warming a fraud. If the debate is over, someone forgot to tell these scientists!

Here is an article that shows how Al Gore is personally becoming filthy rich over his own investments in the Global Warming scare.

Here is a Denver Post article about Dr William Gray, Colorado State University’s scientist and perhaps one of the top experts in hurricanes, who also says Global Warming is a fraud, and may lose his job over it. Colleges insist on academic freedom, unless you say something politically incorrect, and then you are toast.

So, what are Carbon Credits? Just another way for the rich to keep on getting richer. They are just imaginary bullshit that rich people trade back and forth to multiply their bank accounts.

Al Gore is lobbying governments worldwide to invest in “green industries”, while he himself stands to gain the most dollars because of his own personal investment in these green technologies. Nice gig, eh? Sure pays better than being President, doesn’t it Al?

    You know you’re gonna have some people screaming at you for this one right? Oh well, that’s never stopped you before, but I just wanted to say that I agree with you on the global warming issue. It’s mostly cyclical and we humans are giving ourselves too much credit by believing we can alter the cycle.

    Oh, and I guess you are a schnitt show listener? I used to listen but now I tune in to sports talk, schnitt gets too depressing/heavy at times

    I am not a Schnitt show listener, but I am aware of his global warming site. You are right, he gets too depressing. I switch to the liberal talk shows and they make me nuts too. So, I usually stick with NPR.

    Our war for energy independence and economic sustainability

    The US government and other governments are not serious about energy efficiency and renewable energy development and implementation – they are too busy playing politics and capitulating to the Oil Companies.
    IT is time to get series to avert an economic catastrophe – I hope it is not too late
    The world needs to invest $50 trillion in energy in coming decades, building some 1,400 nuclear power plants and vastly expanding wind power, solar power, geothermal energy in order to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, according to an energy study released Friday.
    The report by the Paris-based International Energy Agency envisions an “energy revolution” that would greatly reduce the world’s dependence on fossil fuels while maintaining steady economic growth.
    “Meeting this target of 50 percent cut in emissions and replacing fossil fuel represents a formidable challenge, and we would require immediate policy action and technological transition on an unprecedented scale,” IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka said.
    The scenario for deeper cuts would require massive investment in energy technology development and deployment, a wide-ranging campaign to dramatically increase energy efficiency, and a wholesale shift to renewable sources of energy.
    Assuming an average 3.4 percent global economic growth over the 2010-2050 period, governments and the private sector would have to make additional investments of $50 trillion in energy, or 1.2 percent of the world’s gross domestic product, the report said.
    That would be an investment more than three times the current size of the entire U.S. economy.
    In addition, the world would have to construct 38 new nuclear power plants each year, and wind-power turbines would have to be increased by 18,000 units annually, solar energy output would have to be increased 20 fold every year.
    Let us not forget as we are increasing the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency – the world population is increasing – the demand for energy by advancement in technology worldwide is also increasing. We have to take these factors into account.
    Oil is going to hit at least $200 per barrel, gasoline at the pump will hit $6 or more per gallon, in some countries it is already $10 per gallon.
    Most of the money would be in the commercialization of energy technologies developed by governments and the private sector.
    “If industry is convinced there will be policy for serious, actions for accelerated development of renewable energy and efficiency, then these investments will be made by the private sector.”
    People are hurting financially and economically, this must end, we should strive for a thriving economy with new technology for renewable energy and efficiency.
    We have the technology and knowhow let us stop playing politics – unite our people and our nation in a common goal to avert an economic disaster and maintain our quality of life for generations to come.
    Let us serve as an example to the rest of the world.

While I 100% support a move away from oil, and improving the environment,unlike you, I don’t have my personal financial future tied to it. So, I’m not into faking massive scare tactics to frighten the masses to move toward products and services that will create wealth for Al Gore, and you.

    It is funny that your professional money making energy consultant websites stress honesty so much. That is the first sign of a con man.
